The Chinese stealth fighter J-20 once again drew attention when it was spotted in “Beast Mode,” equipped with eight long-range air-to-air missiles under its wings, according to images released on the social network Weibo.
The aircraft, which can already carry up to 14 missiles by combining internal and external loads, is the main combat model of the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF), which already has around 300 units in operation.
The J-20 was developed to act as an elite “aerial shooter,” capable of penetrating enemy formations using stealth and electronic warfare systems to strike support aircraft such as tankers and early warning platforms. In addition, with advanced sensors and connectivity, it can function as an aerial command center, supporting previous-generation fighters. However, flying with external armaments compromises its stealth, making it a strategic choice depending on the course of combat.
Experts point out that the use of “beast mode” indicates tactical flexibility by China, which can switch between stealth operations and saturation offensives as needed. The latest images suggest that tests with new dual missile racks are underway, reinforcing the effort to turn the J-20 into a complete air superiority fighter.
The aircraft was also showcased in unprecedented detail at the latest Changchun Air Show, revealing new sensors and systems that expand its combat capabilities.
